Foundation and Establishment
The ALUMEED Rehabilitation Association (AURA) for Cerebral Palsy was established in August 1989 as a charitable, non-profit organization. The founders recognized the urgent need for specialized rehabilitation services for individuals with cerebral palsy, a group often underserved in society. AURA was created to provide comprehensive care and support, aiming to help those with cerebral palsy lead independent, fulfilling lives.
History of AURA
AURA’s inception was deeply personal for Dr. Ruby Abbasi, whose youngest son, Bilal, was diagnosed with post-Viral Encephalitis Cerebral Palsy at just 2.5 years old. Bilal remained wheelchair-bound until his passing on November 29th, 2005. This traumatic experience motivated Dr. Abbasi, along with her husband Dr. Major Anwer Ahmed and a dedicated group of parents, doctors, physical therapists, and social workers, to create AURA in 1989. Their vision was to offer specialized rehabilitation services to children affected by cerebral palsy and empower them to live productive, independent lives.
AURA is officially registered with the Social Welfare Directorate Sindh under registration number DSW (425)-K and enjoys Tax Exemption Status under Section 2(36)(c). This allows the organization to accept donations for various initiatives, including child sponsorship, general donations, Zakat, and in-kind contributions. AURA is also registered with the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP) under registration number PCP-2015/366, further underscoring its commitment to transparency and ethical governance.

They also engage in Special Olympics, Naat Competitions, and Art/Tableau Competitions, fostering social interaction, confidence, and growth.

In 2018, AURA gained further recognition by registering with the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP), a certification that highlights the organization’s adherence to high standards of governance, transparency, and ethical practices.
Early Challenges and Growth
In its early years, AURA faced challenges, particularly in terms of resources. However, the dedication of the founders, along with the support of professionals, volunteers, and the local community, ensured the organization’s steady growth. Over time, AURA expanded its services and became a leading center for cerebral palsy rehabilitation, offering tailored care and support to families in need.
Specialization in Bobath Concept Techniques
From its inception, AURA embraced the Bobath Concept for the rehabilitation of children and adults with cerebral palsy. This globally recognized approach focuses on improving movement, coordination, and overall quality of life, making it an essential part of AURA’s treatment model.
Expanding Services and Facilities
As AURA grew, so did its services and facilities. It expanded its therapeutic offerings to include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and more. Additionally, educational programs, vocational training, and behavioral support were incorporated into the rehabilitation model. The facilities were continuously upgraded to meet the diverse needs of individuals with cerebral palsy, offering a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

AURA’s journey from a small rehabilitation center to a leading organization is a testament to the profound impact it has had on the lives of individuals with cerebral palsy. Today, AURA serves hundreds of children and adults, empowering them with the skills and tools to live independent and meaningful lives.
